Bank Holiday Banger!
Good morning bright and early! And what a treat this summer has been, for all of us lucky to live in our beautiful New Forest. Such fabulous weather nearly all summer long has made the simplest things like the morning walk with the dog feel like a holiday, even when it's been a work day.
This coming weekend is a 3 day one because of Monday's Bank Holiday, the last until Christmas; we're fast approaching a different phase of the year. So let's have a banging (=very good or enjoyable) final fling to celebrate our lovely summer!
If you haven't yet been, I can thoroughly recommend Sculpture at Beaulieu and a wander around the fascinating gardens and interior of Palace House. And Beaulieu is an obvious destination whatever the weather, because so much to see is under cover. With over 280 vehicles in its collection, the National Motor Museum tells the story of motoring on the roads and circuits of Britain, from pioneering origins to the present day. From the earliest motor carriages to classic family saloons, displays include land speed record holders, motorcycles, and even a rustic 1930s country garage - although you won't see any old bangers (=old cars in bad condition) there!
However, there are plenty of bangers (= songs with a loud, energetic beat good for dancing) awaiting you this weekend...
It's the big weekend at Exbury Gardens with its Festival of Music already in full swing: tonight it's Motown by Moonlight and tomorrow the brilliant 21st Century Queen - see this newsletter 2 weeks ago for more flavour!
Fleetwood Collective tonight at Forest Arts presents a group of top musicians who'll recreate the magic and energy of Fleetwood Mac’s iconic live shows at their peak in the 1970s and 80s. The Old Mill Summer Live Music Festival 25 takes place all day tomorrow.
And there are more opportunities this weekend to enjoy live music in the garden of the Turfcutters Arms: on Sunday Zac and the Zeros followed by The Bad Pennies and on Monday The Transitions - all great to dance to! Weather permitting there might be a Bank Holiday BBQ with burgers and maybe bangers (= sausages) too!
There's dancing for the more mature too, with Musical Moments at Linden House for people with dementia and their carers - that's next Tuesday.
Nobody is left out!
There was an interesting feature article this week in the Echo about the history of Lymington Nature Reserve - reminding us that for more than 2,000 years, this area was a hub of sea salt production. Industry was flourishing by medieval times and peaked in the early 18th century, with 163 active saltpans. The marshes were an industrial landscape of smoke and steam, a far cry from today's tranquil scenes. Click this link to see some more lovely photos by Echo Camera Club member Trevor Parsons. I think a nice long walk along the coast path might be just the ticket this Bank Holiday weekend...
And finally, the 80th anniversary reminders earlier this month of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made my skin creep with horror at the scale of death and destruction inflicted. I’ve been reminded not to judge past events and decisions - we weren’t there to understand fully the circumstances and ramifications. What remains important, as always, is that we remember the bravery and determination of those who fought for peace. Thank you to Caroline at Scott Bailey for sharing this photo of Lymington’s VJ Day tribute last Friday.
Enjoy your Bank Holiday Weekends, everyone.
Best wishes Jane
